Tonnara Plage

Description of the site

Tonnara Plage is probably the most Southern proper snorkeling spot on the West coast of Corsica. You could call it a real swimming beach. It has a proper parking, a long and wide beach and a restaurant. And a lot of people.
At the Nothern end of the beach, the coast runs east, being the South side of a wide mouth of a small river. Due to this, Tonnara Plage offers an ideal spot for windsurfing at winds from West and South-West. During our stay in 2004, Tonnara Plage was one of the most popular windsurfing sites.

The picture shows you the view North, showing the ideal windsurfing posibilities: winds from the West (left in the picture) give you an ideal course to the coastline several kilometres North.

Google maps offers a great overview of the beach and the parking.
For Google Earth users: our provider Tele2 is not willing to change the MIME-settings of the server, so the server does not support placemark files. Therefor we supply two alternatives:
- save placemark file as *.kmz file (so not as zip) and duouble click it from your explorer, or
- cut and paste the coordinates into the 'fly to' box: 41 25 35.14 N 9 06 17.18 E (this is the most precize way to view the spot anyway!)

Several after our visit to Tonnara Plage, viewing satelite images in Google (Maps and Earth), we found out that only some 200 metres south of the beach, there must be a fantastic snorkeling beach. But be carefull: the the images show dark blue spots close to the beach, that could be sea grass, but can also be caused by sudden depths! (coordinates: 41 25 18.27 N 9 06 31.69 E )

Iles de la Tonnara

Snorkeling character:

The sight is pretty good, almost 10 m, even with all those folks around. Some 50m from the beach lay some rocks, being so large you could call them islands. The French agree: they named them 'Iles de la Tonnara'.
The fish were bigger than on everage. We saw large Striped Breams, Saddle Breams and Rainbow wrasses. We also saw a few green Long-snouted wrasses.
There is no need to be afraid to be alone, the beach is lively untill after 19:00 hours.

Google maps offers a good overview of beach.. It shows that just some two hundred metres south of the beach, you may find a great snorkeling spot: a shockingly pretty small bay. I could be that the dark spots are sudden depths, so be careful!

Travel suggestions

Tonnara Plage is so popular, it is even signposted at the main road between Bonifacio and Sartene (N196). Just follow the signposts and you will run into the parking, wich is pretty large but can also be pretty well filled.
