Snorkeling at Lavasina

Description of the site
This small village has a surprisingly charming beach. Because of its poor protection against waves,
the beach is largely covered with a thick layer of dead sea grass.
Lavasina is the starting point of a popular walking track to Pozzo.
A nice walk, climbing in-between private gardens. You can walk much further and much higher than Pozzo if you like.
Do visit the old restaurant close to the church. Old furniture, an old fridge and old hospitality.
Due to the steep coast, the road runs very close to the water. This makes it easy to miss the beach
Google maps offers a reasonable overview of the beach of Lavasina
For Google Earth users: our provider Tele2 is not willing to change the MIME-settings of the server, so the server does not support placemark files. Therefor we supply two alternatives:
- save placemark file as *.kmz file (so not as zip) and duouble click it from your explorer, or
- cut and paste the coordinates into the 'fly to' box: 42 45 25.94 N 9 27 56.57 E (this is the most precize way to view the spot anyway!)
Snorkeling character:
Although the water was pretty clear, considering the high surf, the site did not offer much. We have been swimming
for half an hour without seeing any fish at all. Because of the high surf and the turbulence of the river ending
at the beach, it was not safe to get to the rocks beside the beach.
The rocky coast seems easy to be reached from the coast, but be carefull; the current of the river makes is it dangerous.
You could try the northern end of the beach, but this does not offer any protection at all against waves.
Travel suggestions
You cann't miss the village. The coastal road around Cap Corse (D80) runs through it. Coming from the south, you can park
your car some 200 metres after you passed the beach. Here you will also find an easy path down to the beach.
To reach the bay-part of the beach, you will have to walk back again.
